The pond is a highly aesthetically appealing addition to your property. The natural beauty of a pond imparts a soothing atmosphere to the whole property. However, simply digging a pond and forgetting about it is a big mistake. A pond needs maintenance. Otherwise, it is not long to turn into a stinking water body and a source of disease. Maintaining a pond in a clean and pristine condition requires some amount of effort on the part of the property owner. There are some important pond cleaning tools that every pond owner must be aware of and use regularly.
Some of the essential tools to clean ponds have been listed here.
Pond Skimmer
A pond Skimmer is one of the most crucial pond cleaning tools. It is basically like a net that skims the pond’s surface and traps leaves, grass, sticks, and other kinds of debris. Decaying organic matter releases ammonia, which is detrimental to the pond ecosystem. Hence, it is necessary to remove all such matter from the pond using a skimmer. Skimmers designed to remove sludge are also available in the market. The type of pond skimmer you need depends upon the size of your pond. A lightweight skimmer is suitable for a small pond. But for a large-sized pond, a heavy-duty skimmer is needed since the volume of debris is much more. A pole to extend the heavy-duty skimmer to five feet must also be used.
Pond Rake
A pond Rake is needed to remove floating organic matter and other kinds of debris from the pond. The organic matter and debris tend to accumulate on the sides of the pond because the water is shallower on the sides, and the temperature is also higher compared to the middle of the pond. Thus, working the rake on the sides is important to catch the organic matter. However, leaves and other kinds of organic matter can also accumulate in the pond’s deeper parts, including the center. This is why a pond rake comes with a rope so that it can be thrown into the deeper parts of the pond to draw in the debris accumulated in those parts.
Aerator
Stagnant water in the pond becomes a hub of floating organic matter and breeding ground for mosquitos. The aerator solves this problem. The aerator keeps circulating water in the pond, which reduces the accumulation of organic matter in the pond and increases the level of oxygen. An aerator’s oxygen-enhancing ability is particularly useful in cold regions when the surface of the pond freezes during the winter months.
Aerator comes in the form of a surface aerator or bottom diffusion aerator. A surface aerator is suitable for a shallow pond. An example of a surface aerator is a fountain. The bottom diffusion aerator is suitable for both deep as well as a shallow pond. Aerators using wind or solar energy are widely available in the market.
Pond Vacuum
Pond Vacuum is suitable for a small pond to remove debris, muck, and other kinds of organic matter. There are two types of pond vacuums. One type of vacuum sucks in the debris from the pond for disposing of. Another type of vacuum sucks in the water and releases it back after removing the debris. A pond vacuum is not much effective for a large pond.
